A BIT ABOUT US AT SOUTHERNHEAD…

Bob Page left school at 15 and worked on fishing boats in Newhaven for 3 years. He bought my first boat at the age of 18 and in 1976 with the help of two backers, Southern Head Fishing Co Ltd was formed and bought the 32ft “Southern Head” Southern Head is an a large area of rock six miles south of Eastbourne, hence the name of the company. Just 3 years later this was replaced with the 40ft “George Clements”.
In 1982 Bob bought out the financial backers and had the”Hahnenkamm” built, moving to work off nearby Eastbourne beach.
Working from the beach allowed the public more access, and quickly found people would try and buy some of our catch as it was landed. Bobs wife Jan started selling the fish from their net store in 1986, The response from the public being able to buy fish this fresh was phenomenal, and very soon more staff was needed to cope with the huge demand. Other boats started landing their fish to them and the fishermen’s wives were employed to work in the shop thus keeping it in the family so to speak. With the shop getting busier each week, Bobs boat was sold in order to concentrate on the shore side of things in the shop. Over the years we have built up a very good relationship with the local community, keeping the quality of our fish ,and friendly staff, who can advise on cooking and preparing all types of fish as the main priority. We now have as many as 30 boats landing their catch to us, ( but with a main stay of 10) they are some of the most up to date boats on the South Coast, and most are part of the responsible fishing scheme. The company is now 35 years old, with 15 employees. Some of the fishermen have been landing to us for over 15 years. Pete Newton Smith and his sons have have 4 boats mainly concentrating on shellfish, But all that catch for us are exceptional fishermen and a very important part of our business. With the help of our fantastic staff we are very proud to have brought the business to where it is now, and it is very much part of the Eastbourne community. supplying the freshest fish and shellfish on the South Coast and delivering countrywide a first class service over the last 35 years…
